NEW YORK - The United States (U.S.) economy threatened to cut off aid if the Palestinians continue to pursue the status of membership in the United Nations (UN).

On Thursday, November 29 later, the Palestinians will submit a draft resolution that would give them an observer member status at the UN.

"The actions of the Palestinians will certainly elicit a reaction from our friends in Congress," said Foreign Ministry spokesman U.S., Victoria Nuland, as quoted by AFP Tuesday (27/11/2012).

"We did not want to pull out the help that is needed by the Palestinians. But if the Palestinians continue to impose its will reply response from the Congress will not either, "Nuland added.

The U.S. government said it has provided economic assistance worth USD3, 5 billion or approximately Rp33, 7 trillion (Rp9.640 per USD) to the Palestinians since 1994. Currently the U.S. Congress is still holding a grant of $ 200 million or approximately Rp1, 9 billion should be channeled to the Palestinians this year.

If accepted as a member of the Palestinian observer, then this could threaten U.S. aid given to the United Nations. This is because the U.S. has a policy not to provide funding assistance to the international organization, if it makes the Palestinians as members.

Palestine is expected to be able to achieve a majority in the UN General Assembly needed to pass its proposed draft resolution. However, the desire to get the status of the Palestinian observer member has been criticized by the U.S. and Israel and cold greeted by the countries of Europe.

The U.S. and Israel fear Palestinians will take issue with Israel to an international forum at the United Nations. The U.S. and Israel said the agreement can only be reached in bilateral negotiations between the two countries rather than through an international forum.

The draft resolution also called on the UN Palestinian Authority to reconsider the possibility of Palestine becoming a full member at the United Nations. Palestinian volunteered to become a full member at the United Nations last year. Desire to fail after the U.S. threatened to veto a resolution that received the Arabs became a full member of the United Nations.
