RAMALLAH - The Palestinians took to the streets after learning the news about the increase in the new Palestinian state at the United Nations (UN). This recognition is something they have long been waiting for.
65 years ago, Israel recognized as a state by the UN. Now turn to a similar recognition of Palestine, at least as a non-member observer state. Recognition was enough for the Palestinians to stand in line with Israel in any peace negotiations in the future.
"How nice to have a state, although only name only," said Palestinian civil servant Mohammed Srour, as quoted by the Associated Press on Friday (30/11/2012).

"Fondest dream of a man is to have an independent country. Especially for us, the Palestinians living under occupation for a long time," he continued.
Approximately 2,000 people filled the street in the city of Ramallah. They carried Palestinian flags and shouted with joy. Some of them also have a fireworks lit as a sign of celebration.
After the euphoria of the victory of Palestine to the United Nations, the people will come back to reality. Until now, the Palestinians still do not have control over borders, airspace or trade. Worse yet, they are led by two mutually hostile parties that President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank and Hamas in Gaza.

However, the Palestinians say it is not symbolic. They believe UN recognition would strengthen their position in the peace talks with Israel in the future.
Warm acceptance from the international community could help Abbas position in the country today. Since the Israeli attack on Gaza last month, Abbas reportedly declining popularity and influenced by Hamas. However, Abbas is now able to get more support from the Palestinian people and Hamas also hinted want to join the government.
