ANKARA - Palestinian Ambassador to Turkey Nabil Maarouf said, at least there are three main objectives to be achieved by the Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip. The attacks, which began Wednesday, November 16, has killed 19 Palestinians.
According Maarouf, Israel attacked Gaza first reason is to gain public support for Israel ahead of elections to be conducted at the beginning of the Zionist state in 2013. It is the same as Israel's attack on Gaza in 2008 which occurs near the date of the election in Israel.
"They're doing the same thing as they did in 2008. Israeli right-wing groups trying to win the election by killing innocent Palestinians, "said Maarouf, Hurriyet quoted on Friday (11/16/2012).
Another reason is to obstruct Palestinian efforts to gain membership status in the United Nations (UN). Palestine plans to submit a draft resolution that would give observer status at the UN.
The filing is planned Palestinian side will be on the 29th November. But Palestinian intentions may be hampered by rising tensions in Gaza.
The last reason is to cover the conflict in Syria. With the attack then what happens in Syria is no longer a priority in the news media.
"Look at the last two days, what are people talking about Syria?," Said Maarouf.
Maarouf opinion was also shared by Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. Davutoglu said the benefits from the Israeli attack on Gaza as well as Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Yet Assad was in a depressed condition with the formation of a new coalition of Syrian opposition.
